A cruise voyage is a photographers dream. Unlike taking photos on land, on a ship, the scenery is always changing. This means you can never really take the same photo twice. Not only do you have the wonderful scenery ashore to capture, but the magnificent ship you are travelling on.
I've received multiple compliments regarding my cruise photography, and I wanted to share with you some of my top tips. I wouldn't say I have amazing photographic skills and knowledge, so if I can capture these beautiful shots, then so can you on your next cruise!
The important thing to remember, is to always carry your camera everywhere you go. Treat your camera like your room key - you never leave without it. The fact is, you never know what amazing things you might capture, and having your camera handy, will give you the perfect opportunity to snap those unexpected moments.

Sun
When taking photos, such as group shots, most people turn their back to the sun, in order to prevent the glare 'ruining' their photo. In fact, 9 times out of 10, the big fireball in the sky, will help you take better photos.
Having the sun directly in front of you, when taking an image, can add captivating effects, warmth and a sense of magic.

Reflections and Shadows
Having a reflection or a shadow in your photo, can give it added dimension. They help turn an average, ordinary looking photo, into an eye-catching and intriguing image.

Tell A Story
It's important to remember to try and tell a story through your images. There is no point capturing a photo that has been done a 1001 times before. This rule best applies when taking photos of people.
It's far too common for people to take a group photo, directly in front of the camera, all stood next to one another in a line. When people know their photo is being taken, they will put on a false smile.
Instead, why not photograph a member of your group, without them knowing, to capture their true emotions. This will help make an image seem more real, instead of a staged, false group photo. It's also important to consider taking photos at different heights, but we'll get to that part later.

Foreground
Having an object close to the camera in the foreground, will help your photo stand out more. It could simply be a tree, a flower, sculpture, anything.

Height
To add more interest, try to consider taking photos at various different heights. You could rest your camera on the floor, or take a shot from the top of a building.

Photos At Night
Taking photos at night is probably one of the hardest things to do, but once you know how to take them, you can create some spectacular images.
It's all about the ISO and exposure settings. The higher your ISO setting, the brighter the image will be, however changing the ISO will increase the 'noise' on the photo. To allow more light to enter the camera, you need to have a higher exposure rate, or increase the shutter speed. However doing so will increase the time it takes for the camera to take the photo, so a tripod or stable surface is a must for high-quality night shots.

Don't be afraid to take lots of photos, good or bad. Play around, learn new things and have fun taking photos on your cruise, that's what I do!
